Read with your student EVERY DAY at least 20 minutes. Have your student read to you, you can read to your student, or even take turns reading pages! Talk with your student about the books you read. What was it about? What was your favorite part and why? What would you change in the story if you were the author?
Practicing the sight words will also help your student learn to read. Half of all the words we read are sight words. Learning those words is half the battle! You can download a complete list below.
GrammarNouns are people, places and things.
principal, school, book Verbs are action words "If you can do it, then you do it. If you do it, it's a verb!" sit, stand, eat, sleep, play Adjectives describe a noun - they tell what kind, which one, how many three, orange, silly, sweet, these, stinky Prepositions are tag-alongs in the sentence - they tell where or when in the house, across the street, over the rainbow CHECK OUT THE VIDEOS ON THE "READING ONLINE" DROP DOWN MENU UNDER "ONLINE FUN"! |
MathChapter 6: Count and Model Numbers - Tens and Ones
We use "quick pictures" of lines and dots to show tens and ones. WHAT CAN I DO AT HOME? Have your student draw a quick picture of a number between 0-120. Use the number grid in the homework folder. Pick a number. Count on by ones. (7, 8, 9, 10, 11....) Count on by tens. (7, 17, 27, 37, ...) Look for opportunities to put objects in groups of 10 and count all the groups by 10 and count on the extras that don't make a group of ten. A pile of pennies is a fun way to practice this skill.
Number Card Games
You need to make 4 cards each of the numbers 0-9 for a deck of 40 cards to play any of these games. You can easily do this using a set of index cards. Each game has rules to make it easier or harder depending on your student's ability level.
WritingFirst grade students need to be able to form each letter both capital and lowercase correctly and legibly. That means the letters need to touch the correct lines and anyone else needs to be able to read what it says.
Opinion and Persuasive Writing Writers are able to persuade others to believe as they do using good reasons. We will practice writing about what we think is the best choice (place for a vacation, lunch to eat, way to get to school, book to read, etc.) and support our opinions with reasons why our opinions are good. Students need to have an introduction sentence and state their opinion, give at least 2 supporting reasons, and a closing sentence. |
More student practice and information on how you as a parent can help your student in each of these areas can be found under the Online Fun and Resources tabs on this website.
